Overview
About this Spot
Playa Avellanas is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, about 10km south of Tamarindo, though the drive is closer to 20km by dirt roads. The beach is a long sandy crescent typical of the region, with a mix of sand and rock bottom. There are several main surf breaks along the beach. At the southern end, near the parking area, a small rock platform creates lefts at mid to high tide. The main area is the rivermouth at the northern end, where a small rocky section holds sand and forms a peak, with the right being the longer ride. The spot features both reef and beach breaks, and the waves can pick up quickly on the reef, but it is less intense than nearby Playa Negra. Other named peaks include La Purruja, a left-hand reef break near the main parking, El Parqueo, a beach break with long, smooth waves, El Palo, a beach break with both left and right barrels, and El Estero at the river mouth, which offers A-frame waves over a sandy and reef bottom. Little Hawaii at the northern end is a right-hand reef break that can handle bigger swells and is best for advanced surfers. The spot works on all tides and is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The length of the rides is usually less than 50m. The beach is generally less crowded than Tamarindo, but it is important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is busy. Access is by car, and there is a parking lot near the southern end. During the rainy season, road conditions can be challenging. There are at least three different breaks on the beach, including the main beach break. A beachfront bar is available for food and drinks. Watch out for rocks and a local pig that sometimes enters the shallow surf. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check online resources before heading out.
