Overview
About this Spot
Agujas is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, in the Garabito canton near the Tárcoles district. The spot is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José and is close to Jacó Beach, Hermosa Beach, Playa Blanca, Playa Escondida, Roca Loca, and Bajamar. To reach Agujas, drive from Orotina to Jacó and turn right at the Playa Agujas exit, then continue for 2 km. The access road is gravel and can get muddy in the rainy season, so a 4×4 vehicle is useful but not always necessary. Parking is available near the beach, but keep your vehicle secure and avoid leaving valuables inside. The beach has a mix of dark sand and rocks, with natural pools forming at low tide. The bottom is a combination of rocks and sand, and pollution can sometimes be an issue. The surf spot provides left waves. Agujas is a regional classic that rarely breaks, with surfable conditions only about five days a year. The best surf is during medium and high tide, with swells from the northwest or south and winds from the east or northeast. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The take-off zone is close to rocks, so caution is needed. The spot is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The crowd is usually light, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Facilities are limited, with no public bathrooms or showers, and only a few local services like surf lessons and stand-up paddleboard rentals. Bring your own food and drinks. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check online resources before heading out. Watch out for submerged rocks and pollution, and be careful during high tide, especially if you are not experienced.
