About this Spot
Caldera is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, north of Jaco and about 20 kilometers from the center of Puntarenas. The spot sits next to a large shipping yard and is known for its gray sand beach with a sandy bottom and some rocks. To get there, park your car to the left of the front gate, follow the road around past the second gate, head down to the beach, and walk right toward the jetty. The main break is called Caldera Jetty. The spot provides both left and right waves. The waves are fast and powerful, usually under 50 meters long, but can reach up to 150 meters on good days. The best surf conditions happen with west and southwest swells and offshore winds from the east. The surf is very consistent, and the spot works best at medium and high tide. Caldera is considered a regional classic and is mostly suited for intermediate surfers. There are usually few surfers in the water, but it can get more crowded on weekends, especially with local bodyboarders. Always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. The area is accessible by car, and there is a paved walkway along the beach for easy access. You can also get a boat taxi from Boca Barranca for a fee, but many prefer to walk. Be aware of rip currents and undertows, and note that water quality can sometimes be affected by pollution. Amenities nearby include bars, restaurants, and local food vendors offering Costa Rican dishes like Churchill, ceviche, and vigorón. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local resources. Nearby surf spots include El Hoyo, Corralillo, Dona Ana, Boca Barranca, and Tivives.
