About this Spot

Dona Ana is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, about 10 kilometers south of the city of Puntarenas and close to the Barranca River mouth. The spot sits between Chacarita and Caldera beaches in the Esparza canton. The beach is around 700 meters long, with gray sand, clear water, and rock formations at both ends. The surf spot provides left waves. The bottom is a mix of rocks and sand, and the wave is fast, sometimes hollow at low tide, and works from low up to high tide. On big south swells, the wave can link up with Boca Barranca, creating long rides. The length of the ride is usually between 150 and 300 meters. The spot is known for being very consistent, especially during the wet season from November to April, with the best swell direction from the south-southwest and offshore winds from the east-northeast. The main entry and exit points are lined with barnacle-covered rocks, so be careful when getting in and out of the water. Access is possible by paying a fee at the park or by paddling over from Boca Barranca, which takes more than 20 minutes, or by boat. Facilities at the beach include restrooms, showers, a restaurant, picnic areas, and parking for a fee. The spot is often crowded, and local surfers are experienced, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is busy. If the main peak is crowded, there is an inside peak in front of the main one that can be a good alternative. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check online resources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Boca Barranca, Caldera, El Hoyo, Corralillo, and Tivives.
