Overview
About this Spot
Boca Quepos is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, near the town of Quepos and close to the Quepos river mouth. The spot is known for its fast, hollow left waves that can reach lengths of 300 to 500 meters when the surf forecast shows a strong west or northwest swell, especially during low tide. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks. Access to the break involves walking along the beach and a long paddle, sometimes starting by jumping off the sea wall into the boat channel and then walking the sandbar. The spot is rarely crowded, but when it is, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The water quality can be affected by pollution, especially after rain due to the river mouth, so check the surf report and webcam for current conditions. There are man-made dangers like buoys and other obstacles in the water, and sharks have been reported in the area. The spot is generally empty and is best suited for experienced surfers or pros, as the waves are fast and require quick reactions—go fast or you might not make it. The wave quality is inconsistent and depends on larger swells from the southwest or northwest. When the swell is smaller, longboarders and beginners might find it more manageable, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The nearest surf spots are Playitas, North Playitas, Manuel Antonio, Playa Bejuco, and Esterillos. Boca Quepos is not a major surf destination but offers a unique experience for those looking for a challenging wave. Always check the surf map and forecast before heading out to get the best conditions.
