About this Spot

The Tree is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, at Playa Hermosa. To get there from Jaco, head south to Playa Hermosa, then turn onto the dirt track by the last building on the right and continue about 400 meters until you see a prominent tree where surfers usually gather. The spot is a fast, hollow beach break with a sandy bottom and is known for being one of the most consistent surf spots in the area. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The ride length is usually less than 50 meters. The best conditions are during medium and high tides, with optimal winds coming from the east, northeast, or southeast. Swell directions that work well here are northwest, southwest, or west. The Tree is often busy, but the break is big enough to spread out the crowd. It has been the site of surf competitions and is considered a regional classic. The spot is suitable for all levels, but the wave is fast and technical, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette to keep things friendly in the water. Local wildlife can include crocodiles and snakes, so stay aware. Nearby surf spots include Gully’s, Hermosa, T box, Roca Loca, and Jaco Beach. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out. There is no information available about alternative names, main peaks, history, or parking. Always check the difficulty of the spot and current conditions before entering the water.
