About this Spot

Bajamar is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, in the Garabito canton, between Tivives Beach and Guacalillo Beach. The spot is about an hour from San José and 30 minutes from Jacó. The beach has dark gray sand, clear blue water, and is surrounded by tropical forests, mangroves, and lagoons. The surf at Bajamar features both beach and reef breaks, with a bottom made of rocks and sand. The surf spot provides left waves. Waves are consistent, usually ranging from 3 to 10 feet, and can get bigger during September-October storms, when the spot can become suitable only for experienced surfers. The best surf conditions are during the winter months, especially December, with clean waves and offshore winds from the north-northeast. The spot works best at medium and high tide. The length of the ride is between 50 and 150 meters. Bajamar is generally empty, but localism can be present, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Hazards include rocks, sea urchins, and pollution, and the area is close to river mouths, so crocodiles may sometimes be present in the sea. Access to Bajamar requires a 4×4 vehicle due to the rough terrain. From Orotina, drive to Caldera, take the La Ceiba exit, and continue for about 8 km over a hill to reach the spot. Parking is available, and the walk to the surf is less than five minutes. Nearby surf spots include Tivives, Corralillo, El Hoyo, Caldera, and Dona Ana. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your surfing level.
