About this Spot

Esterillos is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, divided into three main sections: Esterillos Oeste, Esterillos Centro, and Esterillos Este. The spot is known for its beachbreak with sand and rock bottom, and lava reef fingers that extend out to sea. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Esterillos is a wave magnet and often picks up more swell than nearby Hermosa, with different sections of reef breaking up to about half a mile offshore. The waves can be shifty and sometimes hard to read, but you can find long rides that peel and reform, especially when the conditions are right. At low tide, be careful of the sharp bottom. The spot works on all tides and is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Esterillos Oeste is the most popular section, with a rocky platform and a mermaid statue on the rocks that serves as a take-off point. At low tide, waves break far from shore, offering long rides, while higher tides bring more hollow waves. Esterillos Centro sits between two river mouths and has consistent, slightly more powerful waves, making it a good choice for intermediate surfers. Esterillos Este is the most remote and rarely crowded, with long, mellow rides that are good for beginners and longboarders. The area is less crowded than other nearby surf spots, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Access is easy via Route 34, the Costanera Sur, and parking is available near the beach. Nearby surf spots include Playa Bejuco, The Tree, Gully’s, Hermosa, and T box. When checking the surf forecast, report, map, or webcam for Esterillos, keep in mind that local wildlife like crocodiles and stingrays can be present, so use caution when entering or exiting the water.
