Overview
About this Spot
Gully’s is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, near Playa Hermosa and the Golfo de Nicoya region. The spot features an exposed beach break with a bottom made of sand and rocks. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Gully’s is known for its very consistent surf, with the best conditions usually found during the winter months, especially in December, when a southwest swell meets offshore winds from the north-northeast. The wave is fast and hollow, working best on a mid-incoming tide. The length of the ride is generally less than 50 meters. The area is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers, as the waves become powerful and challenging, especially when the swell is over head high. Strong currents, rips, and undertow are common, so it is important to be cautious and aware of the ocean conditions. There are only a few surfers in the water most of the time, but the spot can get crowded when the surf forecast and report show good conditions. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette before paddling out. Gully’s is not recommended for beginners due to the strong currents and the power of the waves. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The water temperature averages around 28.7°C, so wetsuits are not needed. Access to the spot is easy by car or walking, and it is located just north of the ‘tree’ landmark, about 100 yards away. There is a small river that flows into the area, which helps build up the sandbanks, but be aware of the presence of crocodiles, as there was an incident reported in September 2008. Do not leave valuables in your car, especially in remote areas like this. Nearby surf spots include The Tree, Hermosa, T box, Roca Loca, and Jaco Beach. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check local resources before heading out.
