Overview
About this Spot
Playa Langosta is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, just south of Tamarindo. The spot is known for its consistent surf and a mix of sand and rocky bottoms. The main break is near the river mouth, where the wave peaks at the same place depending on the tide. The spot provides both left and right waves. At low tide, a coral head is exposed and stays just below the surface at high tide, so keep an eye on your position, especially with submerged rocks to the north of the river mouth that extend out from the beach. The area has a few main peaks, including Sapo in the north, which works best on large swells during low tide and breaks over a shallow reef, and Racetracks in front of the Barceló Langosta hotel, a fast right that works best at mid to rising tide. The southern end of the beach has a sandy bottom and is more suitable for beginners. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Playa Langosta is less crowded than nearby spots, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Rips and undertow can be present, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access is via a dirt road past Cala Luna Resort, heading south for about 1-2km, with a small public parking lot about 200 meters from the main break and a short trail to the beach. The area is part of Marino Las Baulas National Park, so access is allowed only during daylight hours to protect turtle nesting sites. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources. Nearby surf spots include Suizo, Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Pico Grande, and El Estero. 4×4 vehicles may be useful if the road is rough or during the rainy season.
