Overview
About this Spot
Playa Junquillal is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, about 12 miles south of Tamarindo and south of Playa Negra. The spot is known for its consistent surf and is considered a regional classic. The beach is a mile-long stretch with both sand and rock bottoms. You can find both beach breaks and reef breaks here. The beach break offers fast, hollow waves over a sandy bottom, while the reef break at the southern end gives longer rides, especially during high tide. The waves break close to shore in shallow water, and the length of the ride can range from 50 to 150 meters. The spot provides both left and right waves. Playa Junquillal works on all tides and is very consistent throughout the year, with the best surf forecast usually during the dry season from December to April, but you can still find good surf during the rainy season. The waves can reach up to 8 feet. The area is pretty remote, and on many days you might see only a few people on the beach and sometimes no one in the water, so the crowd is usually empty. The surf spot is suitable for intermediate surfers due to the rips, undertow, and the quick drop in over the sand bar. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Watch out for rocks and stingrays when walking out, as a sting can ruin your surf day. The spot is accessible by car, and a 4×4 is recommended. Parking is available near the beach. Nearby surf spots include Raps, Playa Negra, Playa Avellanas, Little Hawaii, and Marbella. For the latest surf report, forecast, map, and webcam, check local resources before heading out. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette.
