Overview
About this Spot
Little Hawaii is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, at the northern end of Playa Avellanas. The spot is known for its powerful waves that can reach significant heights, sometimes up to 18 feet, and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The surf spot provides right waves. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, so be careful when paddling out, especially at low and medium tides, which are the best times to surf here. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. Little Hawaii is swell direction sensitive and usually works only on bigger south swells, so always check the surf forecast and report before heading out. The spot is often empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals, especially Roche, the owner of Cabinas Los Olas, and always follow surf etiquette. Parking is available at Cabinas Los Olas, but it’s a good idea to support the place by spending a little money there. To reach the spot, go to Cabinas Los Olas just south of Peña, walk the beach north, cross the river, and you’ll find the break. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for easier access. The spot can be fickle and doesn’t break often, so check the webcam and surf map for current conditions. Nearby surf spots include Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, Playa Langosta, Suizo, and Tamarindo, which offer different wave types and conditions. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions match your level. The area is less crowded due to its location and access, making it a good choice for those looking for a quieter surf session. Remember to respect the environment and the local community.
