About this Spot
Playa Negra is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The spot is known for its consistent surf and powerful, hollow waves that break over a rocky coral reef bottom. The surf spot provides right waves. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot is considered world classic for surfing. The best conditions are usually found during mid to high tide, while low tide exposes more rocks and urchins, so extra care is needed. The left at Playa Negra is short and breaks over rocks, especially at low tide. The spot is a step above other breaks in the area and is recommended for intermediate surfers due to the challenging reef and power of the wave. The surf here is very consistent, with exposure to both Northern and Southern Hemisphere swells, so you can expect reliable surf forecast and report updates. The crowd is usually light, but when the spot gets busy, it is important to respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access to Playa Negra is possible by car, with a 4×4 recommended for some roads.
