Rio Sierpe

Rio Sierpe is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, near Drake Bay and south of Dominical. The spot is only accessible by boat, usually from the town of Sierpe or from jungle camps in the Drake area. The surf break is found at the rivermouth, and the bottom is sand. The spot is known for long, fast, and hollow waves that can reach lengths of 150 to 300 meters. The surf here is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The spot sometimes breaks, and when it does, the waves are powerful and can form green beach break tubes. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best conditions are during the incoming tide, with mid to high tides preferred. Swell directions from the southwest are ideal, but the spot also works with south and northwest swells. Wave heights are usually in the 2 to 3 feet range. East winds help create better surf conditions. The area is generally empty, so crowds are not common, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if the spot gets busy. Access is only by boat, and surfers often need to negotiate the river mouth to reach the break. Be aware of strong rips and undertow in the area.
