About this Spot
Matapalo is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, about 18 kilometers southwest of Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula. The area is remote, surrounded by rainforest, and the entrance is reached by a dirt road that is usually in good condition, but river crossings can be difficult during the rainy season. The spot is known for its consistent surf, with several breaks nearby including Pan Dulce, Backwash, and The Crack. Matapalo itself is a point break with a coral reef and sand bottom, and the waves can range from 50 to 150 meters in length. The surf spot provides right waves. The best time to surf is during the dry season from December to April, when waves are generally smaller and conditions are clean, while the rainy season from May to November brings larger, more powerful swells. The spot is for experienced surfers due to rips, undertow, and rocks, especially at middle or high tide. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Parking is available on the only road near the break. The area is not crowded, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. The local surf community values humility and respect, so be mindful when the spot is crowded. There is only one cantina nearby and lodging is limited and expensive. The closest town is Puerto Jimenez, which is laid back and safe. The spot is surrounded by natural beauty, with monkeys and parrots in the trees and beaches that have received the Blue Ecological Flag for environmental efforts. For surf forecast, report, map, and webcam information, check online resources before heading out. The paddle out can take more than 20 minutes, and some surfers use boats to access the spot. Always check the difficulty of the spot and the current surf report before entering the water.
