Overview
About this Spot
Pavones is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, in the canton of Golfito on the southern side of the Gulfo Dulce. The spot is known for its long left point break, often considered one of the longest in the world, with rides that can go over a kilometer when the conditions are right. The wave at Pavones works best with a big southern or southwest swell, especially during the rainy season from April to August, when the surf is most consistent and powerful. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and the spot works on all tides. The wave length ranges from 300 to 500 meters, and the spot is known to get ultra crowded when the forecast is good. The surf spot provides left waves. Offshore winds from the north to northeast help keep the wave face clean. Pavones is about six to eight hours by car from San Jose, or you can fly to Golfito and take a taxi or bus for the last part of the trip. The nearest town of any size is Golfito, about two hours north. There are several places to stay in Pavones, with a range of accommodations, and the local community is friendly. The area is remote, so check the surf report and map before heading out. Other surf spots nearby include Zancudo Beach, Pan Dulce, Backwash, Matapalo, and Rio Sierpe. The spot can be fragile, and changes in the river can affect the wave quality. When the surf is working, the town can get crowded, so respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. For live conditions, look for a webcam if available. Pavones is also known for its natural surroundings, with rainforest views from the water and a laid-back vibe in the town.
