About this Spot
Ostional is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, about 15 kilometers north of Nosara. The spot sits on a 7-kilometer stretch of black sand beach that is part of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, a protected area known for Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting. The surf spot has a sandy bottom and works best at medium to high tide. The waves are consistent throughout the year, and the spot provides both left and right waves. Swell from the north or northwest is ideal, and the best conditions are usually found between December and March. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The spot is known for strong rips and undertow, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the swell reaches 3 feet, barrels can form. The spot is generally empty, but if it gets crowded, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Ostional is suitable for all levels, but it is important to check the surf report and forecast before heading out. Access to Ostional is via gravel roads, and a 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially in the rainy season when river crossings may be needed. During the rainy season, access can be limited, and the beach may only be reached by 4×4. The area is close to other surf spots like Marbella, Playa de Nosara, Pelada, Olga’s, and Playa Nosara. During turtle nesting season, especially during arribadas, access to the beach is restricted and only possible with a local guide. Always check the map and webcam for current conditions. Remember to respect the wildlife and local regulations when visiting the spot.
