Overview
About this Spot
Red Beach is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula just south of Orewa and about 40 kilometers north of central Auckland. The beach is around 2 kilometers long and has a sandy bottom with a reddish hue from iron-stained fossil shells. The spot is known for its regional classic quality and is suitable for all levels of surfers. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are usually with a northeast swell and offshore winds from the west, and the waves are generally soft and mellow. The main take-off area is about 50 meters away from the rocks, and the wave length is less than 50 meters. Red Beach is often quiet and can be empty, but it gets more fun and challenging on a large swell, making it good for both longboarders and shortboarders. Facilities at the beach include toilets, showers, and changing rooms. Lifeguards from the Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club are present during the summer months. To get to Red Beach, drive down the hill towards Orewa beach and river, turn right halfway down the hill, then turn left just before the shops; the beach is at the end of the road. Nearby surf spots include Orewa Beach, Long Bay, Browns Bay Bar, Mairangi Bay, and O’Neills Reef. Always check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out to get the latest conditions. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
