Overview
About this Spot
Bethells Beach is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, also known as Te Henga. The beach sits about 37 kilometers west of Auckland at the mouth of the Waitākere River, meeting the Tasman Sea. The area is recognized for its black volcanic sand and rugged coastline. The surf spot features a sandy and rocky bottom, with waves that break fast and hard depending on the swell direction. The spot provides both left and right waves. Swells from the southwest and west/northwest are common, and the banks usually last all winter. The surf here is very consistent, and the wave size is often 2-3 feet bigger than nearby Piha. The main beach has a break off the island, and you can walk north over the sandhill to reach another spot called O’Neills. The length of the ride is usually between 150 and 300 meters. The spot works on all tides. The beach is rated as a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. Rips and undertow are present, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The crowd is usually empty, but localism can be an issue, so respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always check the surf etiquette. There are reports of sharks in the area, and you should be aware of theft from vehicles and dog waste on the sand. Access is by car from Auckland, heading west through Waitakere township and turning left to Te Henga Road. Parking is available at the beach, and there are toilets nearby. The spot is close to other surf locations like Te Henga, O’Neill, Whites Beach, Maori Bay, and Piha. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
