About this Spot
Maori Bay is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, also known as Maukatia. The spot sits just south of Muriwai on the west coast and is easy to reach by driving along the NW Motorway, heading northwest towards Helensville, then turning off after Kumeu towards Muriwai Beach. Once at the beach, turn left up the hill to find Maori Bay by the gannet colony. Parking is available at the beach, and there are facilities like toilets and showers. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Maori Bay is a beach break with a couple of reefs to the south, and the bottom is mostly sand. The spot works best on medium and high tides. The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, and the best wind comes from the east. The waves here are powerful and can be hollow, with a heavy shore break, especially when the swell is over 3 meters. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The spot is very consistent and can be surfed by all levels, but the conditions can get dangerous with strong rips, undertow, rocks, and the presence of sharks. It is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. The area is rarely crowded, but weekends can see more surfers, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. For your surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local resources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Muriwai Beach, Bogan River, O’Neill, Bethells Beach, and Te Henga. Always be aware of the conditions and hazards before entering the water.
