Overview
About this Spot
Piha is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the west coast about 45 kilometers from Auckland city. The beach is known for its black iron-sand and consistent surf conditions. Piha is divided into South Piha and North Piha, each with different peaks and surf experiences. The spot is a regional classic with a sand bottom and works on all tides. The waves are powerful and can range from 1 to 10 feet, with the best conditions usually found in the summer months when the wind is cleaner. The main peaks include lefts off the headland in South Piha, running from the Nun through to Camel, Submarine Rock, and Bee-Hive. There is also a right hander off Lion Rock, but it can be tricky due to the rip currents. The spot provides both left and right waves. The bar at South Piha can be accessed via the Keyhole at low to mid tide, but be careful as strong rips and undertow are common, especially near the rocks and submarine rock. The currents can shift quickly, so always check the surf report and forecast before heading out. The beach is patrolled by two surf lifesaving clubs during summer, and it is important to stay within the flagged areas for safety. The surf here is very consistent, but the conditions depend on the swell, wind, and sand banks. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The crowd is often light, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. There are surf schools available for lessons, and you can find a surf map and webcam online to check the current conditions. Nearby surf spots include Whites Beach, Karekare, Te Henga, Bethells Beach, and O’Neill. Always be aware of the strong rips and make sure you can swim well.
