Overview
About this Spot
Muriwai Beach is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, about 42 kilometers northwest of Auckland city. The beach stretches for around 50 kilometers and is known for its black sand and consistent surf conditions. The spot features a sandy bottom and is surfable on all tides, with the best conditions usually found in 2-4 foot waves and a mid-tide incoming. Swells up to 6-8 feet can occur, but the waves may close out and become difficult to manage at that size. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The most popular place to surf is to the right of the rocks in front of the car park. There are many sandbanks along the beach, so you can often find a peak to yourself. Rips and strong currents are common, especially when the surf is bigger, so always be cautious and check the surf report and forecast before heading out. Lifeguards are on patrol at the southern end by the car park during summer months only. Sharks can be present due to the nearby seal colony, and there have been incidents in the past, so stay alert. The beach is accessible by car, with parking available near the golf course and car park. Facilities include toilets and showers. The area can get crowded, especially in summer and on weekends, so respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. The spot is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Nearby surf spots include Maori Bay, Bogan River, O’Neill, Bethells Beach, and Te Henga. For more details, check the latest surf map, webcam, and forecast before your session. Watch out for soft sand if driving on the beach and be aware of hot sand in summer.
