About this Spot

Goat Island Reef is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, just north of Leigh on the east coast. The spot is a right-hand point break that forms between Goat Island and the mainland, with a coral reef bottom and a rocky beach. The wave is hollow and powerful, with steep drop-ins and barrel sections, and usually breaks in the same place every time. The best conditions for surfing here are with a big north swell and winds from the west, southwest, south, southeast, or east, as the spot is protected by large cliffs. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters and it works best at medium and high tide. Goat Island Reef rarely breaks, but when it does, it is considered a regional classic. The spot is recommended for intermediate and expert surfers due to the challenging waves, rocks, rips, undertow, and the presence of urchins and sharks. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access to the spot involves parking in the main car park on top of the cliff and walking down to the beach. From the beach, walk about 300 meters to the left to find the break. Goat Island is part of the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, so fishing and disturbing marine life are not allowed. The area is known for its marine life, and the reserve is popular for snorkeling and diving. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. The crowd is usually few surfers, but localism can be present. For your surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local resources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Daniels Reef, Pakiri, Omaha, Tawharanui, and Forestry. Always be aware of the conditions and hazards before entering the water.
