Overview
About this Spot
Long Bay is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the east coast in the suburb of Torbay. The spot is found within Long Bay Regional Park, and you can reach it by exiting the Auckland Northern Motorway at Oteha Valley Road, continuing straight onto Beach Road, passing Torbay shops, and following the signs to the park. Parking is available near Cliff Road, with the main surf area directly in front. The beach has a sandy bottom with some rocky areas and several peaks along its length. The spot provides both left and right waves. The waves at Long Bay are generally mellow and short, with a ride length of less than 50 meters, and the spot is best for beginners. The surf here is sheltered and rarely breaks, so it is important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out, as conditions can be inconsistent and the spot only works well with a north-easterly swell and south-west winds, especially at low to mid tide. The optimal wave size is around 2 feet. The southern reef can sometimes offer better surf when the conditions line up. The spot is usually empty, but it can get crowded at times, so always respect the locals and follow surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions match your level. The area is known for its nice walks, beach, and park facilities, with a trail north of the beach and a nearby café. Nearby surf spots include Browns Bay Bar, Mairangi Bay, Red Beach, O’Neills Reef, and Takapuna. There is no webcam or live surf map available for Long Bay, so checking the latest surf report and forecast is recommended before making the trip.
