About this Spot

Tamaki Reef is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand. The spot sits off a rocky point near the northern end of Takapuna Beach, close to the Tamaki Yacht Club. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and there are man-made hazards like buoys in the area. Pollution can sometimes be an issue, so check local conditions before heading out. Tamaki Reef rarely breaks and is known to only work under specific conditions, sometimes only when the wake of a large boat passes by. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best tides for surfing here are medium and high. The optimal swell direction is from the northeast, and the best wind comes from the west. The spot is generally empty, but if it does get crowded, remember to respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. The spot is suitable for all levels, but check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. There are shallow rocks off the point, so be careful to avoid injury. Access is by car, with parking available near Takapuna Beach. From Auckland, drive north on State Highway 1, take the exit onto Esmonde Road, and follow signs to Takapuna Beach. The reef is directly in front of the parking area. Nearby surf spots include Takapuna, O’Neills Reef, Mairangi Bay, Browns Bay Bar, and Long Bay. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out. Tamaki Reef is not a consistent spot and is sometimes considered a hoax due to how rarely it breaks, so always check the surf report and conditions before making plans.
