About this Spot

Tawharanui is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, found on the Tawharanui Peninsula south of Omaha in the Tawharanui Regional Park. The spot is also known as Anchor Bay. The beach break features a mix of sand and rocks on the bottom and works on all tides. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are usually with a northeast swell and southwest wind. The main area to surf is right in front of the car park, which is easy to reach after driving through the park and walking onto the beach. There are three main surf spots along the beach. The length of the ride is generally less than 50 meters. The spot is suitable for all levels, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Tawharanui can get crowded on weekends and holidays, especially in front of the car park where surfers, bodyboarders, and swimmers all share the water. Always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Hazards include rocks, rays, and the occasional shark, so keep an eye out and stay aware in the water. The area is also popular for family days out, with grassy areas, rockpools, and walking tracks nearby. The park is about 80 minutes north of Auckland by car. Parking is available at the end of the road inside the regional park, with an electric gate for animal protection.
