About this Spot
Dewata is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, near the city of Galle and the village of Dewata. The spot is known for its sandy bottom and consistent waves, making it a place where surfers of all levels can surf, especially beginners. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Dewata works on all tides and is considered a regional classic with a wave length of less than 50 meters. The spot is rarely crowded, but when it is, remember to respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The area is also known for its friendly and curious local surfers. Access to Dewata is after the bridge from Unawatuna, on the main road to Galle. The beach is close to the historic Galle Fort and is surrounded by several beachside restaurants. Dewata is also a well-known fishing area. If you are staying at Surf City, you can ask local surfers for tips, or you can visit the Sahana, which is just before Galle on the main road from Unawatuna, have some food, and then head to the beach through their back entrance. The spot is very consistent, and the best surf conditions are usually with a south-southwest swell and offshore winds from the northeast. There are several surf schools at Dewata, and you can find qualified instructors for lessons. The water quality is generally good, but always check local conditions before paddling out. If the waves are over 4 feet, try surfing towards the hotel side of the beach, as the wave sometimes wraps around the point. Dewata is close to other surf spots like Unawatuna, Wijiya Beach, Dalawella, Thalpe, and Koggala Lefts. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
