About this Spot

Wijiya Beach is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, near the town of Unawatuna and also known as Dalawella. The spot features a 400 meter stretch of coast with several reef breaks and a mix of sand and rocks on the bottom. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. You can surf here at all tides, and the waves are very consistent, making it a reliable place to check the surf forecast or report. The main break includes a left running along the reef edge, where you should be careful not to get caught too deep, and a right that is easier for surfers with less experience. When the main right closes out, there are more serious lefts just past Frog Rock. The area is usually empty or uncrowded, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets busy. The regulars are known to be friendly, and you can find beachside accommodation at Wijiya Beach Cottages, which are still open after being damaged by the tsunami. There are a couple of bars along the beach, and the spot is about 3 kilometers southeast on Matara Road from the Beach Road turnoff at Unawatuna. The best time to surf is during the wet season from November to April, when the swell is most reliable. The spot works best with a southwest swell and offshore winds from the northeast. The length of the ride is usually between 50 and 150 meters. Nearby surf spots include Dalawella, Unawatuna, Thalpe, Dewata, and Koggala Lefts. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. For more details, you can look up the surf map, webcam, or latest surf report for Wijiya Beach.
