About this Spot

Arugam Bay is a surf spot located in Southeast, Sri Lanka. The spot is known for its consistent right-hand point breaks and is considered a world classic surf destination. The main surf season runs from April to October, with the best conditions usually between July and September when the southwest monsoon brings steady swells. The spot works on all tides and the bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand. The main break, called Main Point, is close to the center of town and offers waves that are best for intermediate and advanced surfers, with rides between 150 and 300 meters. Longboards are suitable only on smaller days. The spot is not recommended for beginners, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The area can get crowded, especially during peak season, so respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. The best swell directions are east, southeast, south, and southwest, with a minimum swell height of 3 feet needed for good waves. The best wind directions are southwest, west, and northwest. Boards commonly used here include shortboards, mid-lengths, retro boards, and longboards. There are several other surf spots nearby, such as Arugam Beach, Elephant Rock, Pottuvil Point, Peanuts Farm, and Whiskey Point, each offering different wave types and conditions. Access to the main break is easy from the center of town, with a short walk south around the point. The region is quite poor, and power or water shortages can happen, but there are surf bungalows and western-style facilities available. Making friends with locals is helpful, especially if you want to explore less crowded spots outside the main city. The food in the area is varied, with both local and international options.
