Overview
About this Spot
Thalpe is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, about 10 kilometers south of Galle and close to Unawatuna. The spot sits in front of a small wooden hut with surf lessons painted on its sign, just south of the Coral Beach Guesthouse. Thalpe is known for its coral reef and sand bottom, with the best surf conditions during medium and high tide. The spot provides both left and right waves. Wave heights usually range from chest-high to over 5 feet, and the ride length is between 50 and 150 meters. The break is a reef break, and the water is fairly deep at high tide, which can help surfers get comfortable with reef surfing. At low tide, rocks are exposed, so be careful when entering or exiting the water, but there are no sea urchins here. The surf spot is often overlooked by travelers since the break is not visible from the road, making it less crowded and mostly frequented by local surfers. The vibe is laid back, and locals are usually happy to point out the best spots, but always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette. Thalpe is a good place for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The area is also known for its unique rock pools, created by local fishermen, and for traditional stilt fishing. You can reach Thalpe by tuk-tuk from Galle or Unawatuna, with a short ride from either location. Nearby surf spots include Dalawella, Wijiya Beach, Koggala Lefts, Unawatuna, and South Beach. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out. Always be patient, as the swell can change quickly, and what looks like mush can turn into good waves fast.
