About this Spot

Devil Island is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, in the Ahangama area. The spot is also known as Sion or Devil’s Rock. The bottom is made of coral reef, so be careful of shallow areas, especially near the rights. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the waves can hold up to 5 feet. The spot is best surfed from November to April, with the most favorable conditions when there is a southwest swell and a northeast wind. The surf here is very consistent, making it a reliable place to check the surf forecast and report. Access to the spot is straightforward, with a small channel just to the right of the New Bay View Villa hotel, which makes paddling out easier. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers and pros. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The area can get crowded, so respect the locals and make sure to follow the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is busy. The reef is dead coral, so avoid nose diving to prevent injuries. If the main peak is crowded, you can move to one of the outer peaks for a more relaxed session. Devil Island is close to other surf spots like Soul’n’Surf, Gas Station, Midigama Right, Lamana Point, and Midigama Left. For the latest surf conditions, use a surf map, check the forecast, and look for a webcam if available. Always check the difficulty of the spot before entering the water to make sure you have the right skills for the conditions.
