Devils Rock

Devils Rock is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, also known as Sion Surf Point, found in Ahangama on the southwest coast. The spot is a reef break with a bottom made up of coral reef and sand. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best time for surfing here is usually from November to April, with early mornings offering the most favorable conditions. The spot is known for being empty most of the time, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot gets crowded. The wave can handle swells up to 5-6 feet, and rides can reach up to 350 meters, but on bigger days the wave may close out. There are two main peaks that work depending on the swell size and tide. At low tide, a large rock sticks out in the line-up, so catching the bigger sets helps you get around it. On mid tide, a section of reef can suck up and look like it might break, but then the wave reforms just to the left, which is where the better take-off spot is. The spot is not for beginners due to the rocks and the sketchy entry, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The spot is good for longboard or SUP, especially on smaller swells and higher tides, but the waves are not very powerful in those conditions. The paddle out is through a small channel just to the right of the New Bay View Villa hotel, which is also a good place to stay and watch the surf.
