About this Spot

Unawatuna is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, about 5km from Galle and midway between Hikkaduwa and Midigama. The spot sits on a coral reef bottom and is known for regular, short waves that reach up to 3 feet, breaking over the reef. The best surf conditions are usually found at low and medium tide. The spot is mostly used by local teenage surfers, with only a few foreigners seen in the lineup. The area is not crowded, but when it gets busy, it’s important to respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Sea urchins and rocks are present on the reef, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The paddle out is long, taking more than 20 minutes, or you can reach the break by boat. Surfboards are not welcome on local buses, so tuk-tuks are a common way to get there. Unawatuna is close to other surf spots like Wijiya Beach, Dalawella, Dewata, Thalpe, and Koggala Lefts. The surf season runs from October to April, with the most consistent surf and dry weather from November to March. The spot is best for intermediate surfers due to the reef and wave size. The length of ride is less than 50 meters. There are many guesthouses nearby, but prices are higher than in Midigama or Narigama. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check reliable surf resources before heading out. Respect the local surf community and make sure to follow the rules in the water.
