Overview
About this Spot
Wizard Beach is a surf spot located on the Caribbean coast of Panama, on the northwestern coast of Bastimentos Island in the Bocas del Toro region. The spot is also known as Playa Primera or First Beach. You can reach Wizard Beach by taking a water taxi from Bocas Town to Bastimentos Island, then walking about 20 to 30 minutes from Old Bank through a forest trail, or by boat directly to the beach if the swell is not too big. The beach features a wide stretch of sand and clear water, with a backdrop of tropical forest. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is sandy, and the best surf conditions are usually during medium and high tide. Wave heights are generally around 3 to 5 feet, but conditions can change quickly depending on the swell and tide. The beach break is regular, with a wave length of less than 50 meters. The spot is mostly empty, with only a few locals around, so you often have the beach to yourself. Be aware of strong rips and undertow along the entire beach, especially after rain when the trail can be muddy. The spot is better for bodyboarding, but surfers of all levels can try it, depending on the day’s conditions. Always check the surf forecast, report, and map before heading out, and look for a webcam if available to see real-time conditions. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Nearby surf spots include Silver Back, Carenerro Point Break, Skully’s, Punch Reef, and Dumpers. There are budget accommodations near the beach, like Claudio’s house, where you can stay and use the kitchen. Remember to bring your own food and drinks, as there are limited facilities at the beach.
