About this Spot

Silver Back is a surf spot located on the Caribbean coast of Panama, at the northwestern tip of Isla Bastimentos in the Bocas del Toro region. The spot is about a 40-minute boat ride from Isla Colon or a 20-minute boat ride from Bocas Town. Silver Back is known for its powerful, heavy waves that break over a deep coral reef, with the peak often shifting position due to strong currents. The spot only breaks when the nearby Dumpers passes 8ft, and the waves can reach up to 20 feet during big swells. The ride is short and fast, with hold downs and strong rips and undertow, so it is important to bring a big board, at least a 7-footer, and an extra leash and board in case of breakage. The spot is best accessed by boat, but it can also be reached by land after a long walk and a paddle of more than 20 minutes. The bottom is coral reef, and the spot works on all tides. Silver Back is considered a world classic surf spot, but it is suitable only for experienced surfers due to the challenging conditions, strong currents, and the risk of injury or equipment damage. The spot is usually empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The surf spot provides right waves. The best conditions are with a northeast swell and offshore winds from the southwest, with the most consistent surf in the spring, especially in March. The length of the ride is less than 50 meters. Nearby surf spots include Wizard Beach, Carenerro Point Break, Skully’s, Punch Reef, and Dumpers. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check reliable sources before heading out.
