Overview
About this Spot
Isla Grande is a surf spot located on the Caribbean coast of Panama. The spot sits on a small island off the Caribbean coast, near the town of La Guayra in Colón Province. Isla Grande is about 5 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, with white sand beaches and clear water. The surf break is a reef break with three main peaks: a left-hander near the rocks, a center peak that breaks both left and right, and a right-hander on the left side. The bottom is sharp coral reef, so wearing booties is recommended. The waves are peaks over the coral, not especially hardbreaking or hollow, but they can have good shape and are consistent. The best surf conditions are with a northeast swell and offshore winds from the west, and mid-tide on a rising tide is usually best. The spot is generally empty, so crowds are rare, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if the spot gets busy. The length of the ride is less than 50 meters. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Urchins, rocks, and sharks are present, so be cautious. To get to Isla Grande, drive from Panama City towards Colón, then turn at the “Rey” supermarket near Portobello, continue through Portobello, and park in the lot marked for Isla Grande. From there, take a boat across the strait to the island. The trip from Panama City takes about 2.5 hours. You can stay in cabins or hotels on the island and walk to the surf. The area is known for good seafood and a laid-back atmosphere. Isla Grande also hosts cultural festivals like the Isla Grande Carnival and Festival de San Juan Batista. For surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local resources before heading out. The spot provides both left and right waves.
