About this Spot

El Playon is a surf spot located on the Caribbean coast of Panama, near the town of Portobelo in Colón Province. The spot is found on a private beach in a protected area, and access is mainly by boat, with rides from Isla Grande taking about 15 minutes and costing between 15 and 25 USD. You can also reach the area by driving to La Guaira in Colón, following the same road used to get to Isla Grande, but road access is private and requires a 4×4 vehicle and permission from the landowner. The beach is remote, so bring enough food and water. The surf break at El Playon features a sand and rock bottom, and the waves work on all tides. The spot is known for strong beach breaks, with waves typically 2 to 3 feet bigger than those at Isla Grande. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The area is empty most of the time, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if the spot gets crowded. The spot provides both left and right waves. Powerful rip currents, undertow, rocks, and sea urchins are present, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. El Playon is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The area is rich in wildlife, with birds, monkeys, and macaws often seen nearby. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check reliable sources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Isla Grande, Isla Mamey, Maria Chiquita, Boca la Caja, and Kuna An. Always respect the protected status of the area and the preferences of the landowner regarding access.
