Overview
About this Spot
Hikkaduwa is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, known for its consistent surf and warm water. The spot sits about 3 km south of the Hikkaduwa bus and train station, in the Wewala area, and is easy to reach by bus, train, or car. The main break is about 50 meters offshore, in front of several guesthouses, and is usually busy with surfers from dawn till dusk. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, and the spot works on all tides. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Wave size is usually 2-3 feet, with occasional days reaching 4-5 feet. The water temperature is ultra-warm, ranging from 27 to 30°C, so you won’t need a wetsuit, but neoprene shoes are a good idea to protect your feet from the coral. Hikkaduwa is suitable for all levels, but it’s important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The area is crowded, especially during the dry season from November to March, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. You might share the lineup with a few small crocs, but they are rarely a problem. There are several surf breaks nearby, including Main Point, Coral Garden, Benny’s, North Jetty Hikkaduwa, and Owerkanda. The beach has a relaxed vibe, with plenty of guesthouses, cafés, and restaurants. There’s a small surf shop called A-Frame on the beach for board repairs and gear. Surf schools and equipment rentals are available. Hikkaduwa National Park, Sri Lanka’s first marine sanctuary, is nearby and features a variety of corals.
