Overview
About this Spot
Clovelly Beach is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa. The spot sits between graffiti-covered walls and a train track, close to Fish Hoek Beach. The bottom is sandy, and the break is usually less than 50 meters long. The surf here is very inconsistent and mainly works well when strong north-west winds are blowing, so it is best to check the surf forecast and report before heading out. The spot is generally empty, but you might see tourists on the nearby Fish Hoek Beach. The average wave size is about 2 to 4.5 feet, but sometimes it can reach 5 to 6 feet during gale force winds. The spot is shallow at times, and you might find yourself skimming over just a few inches of water. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best conditions are at low and medium tide. The area is usually quiet, and you can see the car park from the beach, which has space for about 14 vehicles. There are lifeguards and shark spotters on duty, and animals are allowed on the beach. The water is warmer than on the Atlantic side, and dolphins and whales can be seen, especially in winter. Sharks are also present, so always pay attention to shark warnings. The spot is suitable for all levels, but check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. The beach is also used for fishing, angling, and launching sea kayaks.
