Overview
About this Spot
Bellows is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa. The spot sits far out to sea, southeast of Seal Island in False Bay, and is only accessible by boat. The bottom is a coral reef, and the area is known for cold water all year round. Bellows is considered a big wave surf spot and is mostly surfed by experienced surfers or pros. The spot provides both left and right waves. There are three main breaks in the area: Bellows, which is the main break and picks up the most swell, East Shoal which is a deeper reef needing bigger swell to work, and an unnamed righthander off Seal Island. The waves at Bellows need a large swell, usually around 8-10 feet to start working, and can hold up to 20 feet or more on big days. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Hazards at this spot include strong rips, undertow, rocks, urchins, and a high presence of sharks, especially due to the proximity to Seal Island, which is known for its large population of great white sharks. The weather can be unpredictable, with strong winds common, so it is important to check the surf forecast, report, and map before heading out. Winter is the best season for swell, but always check the sea conditions and tides. The spot is usually empty, but if you find other surfers, respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. There are no facilities or parking, and you need your own boat and extra fuel to reach the break. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Nearby surf spots include Cemetery, Muizenburg Corner, Baileys Cottage, Electrics, and Danger Reef. For more info, check the latest surf forecast, report, and webcam before planning your session.
