Overview
About this Spot
Sunsets is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, in the Kommetjie area on the east side of Long Beach, right in front of the holiday homes. The spot is a heavy bombora reef break with a coral reef bottom and is known for producing big waves, especially during storms when wave heights can reach up to 30 feet. Sunsets is a regional classic and is mainly for experienced surfers, not suitable for beginners. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best board to use here is a gun, as the waves are powerful and require skill to handle. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot works best on low and medium tides. Swell directions that work best are southwest, west, and northwest, with a minimum swell height of 10 feet needed for the spot to start working. The best wind directions are east and southeast. The spot is popular with tow surfers when the waves get really big. The crowd is moderate, so it’s important to respect the locals, especially when the spot is busy, and always check the surf etiquette when the lineup is crowded. Nearby surf spots include Boneyards, Krans, Kakapo, Long Beach, and Pebbles Shorey. Before paddling out, check your skills to make sure the spot and the conditions fit your surfing level. Sunsets is not a place for beginners, so only go out if you have the right experience and equipment. Always pay attention to the conditions and be aware of the powerful waves and the reef bottom. Respect the lineup and the local surfers to keep things cool in the water.
