Overview
About this Spot
Frigates Passage is a surf spot located in Fiji and Islands, Fiji. This spot is found off the coast of Beqa Island, about 20 kilometers from the mainland, and is only accessible by boat, with the trip usually taking 30 to 45 minutes depending on the weather and sea conditions. The bottom is made up of coral reef, and the spot works at all tides. The wave length ranges from 150 to 300 meters. The surf here is known for its powerful, fast, and hollow lefts that break along a boomerang-shaped reef passage. The main section, called the bowl, starts to turn around the reef and offers a wall that gets faster and rounder as you go down the line, eventually closing out on shallow coral. Sets can break in a couple of spots, with the best waves coming in at 5 to 7 feet, and sometimes bigger sets roll through. There are also some rogue sets that break wide and more parallel to the reef, which are fast, hollow, and shorter. The inside waves break from about 3 to 4 feet and have a good open section at the start. There is no channel to paddle through once you are caught inside, so be prepared for that. The spot is usually empty, so you can expect little to no crowd, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if it gets busy. The spot is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers due to the power and speed of the waves and the shallow coral bottom. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. The best time to surf is during the Southern Hemisphere swell season from April to October. Frigates Passage is near other surf spots like Serua Rights, Pipes, Beachouse, Hideaway, and Sigatoka Rivermouth.
