Overview
About this Spot
Roca Bruja is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, inside Santa Rosa National Park. The spot is also known as Witch’s Rock. The surf break is marked by a large volcanic rock formation rising from the ocean. The bottom is sandy, and the waves work best at medium and high tide. The spot provides both left and right waves. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The surf quality is considered world classic, and the frequency of good surf is regular. The spot is usually empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Access to Roca Bruja is by boat or by 4×4 vehicle. If you drive, enter Santa Rosa National Park, go about 6 miles, and take the left at the fork. The road is rough, so a 4×4 is needed, especially in the rainy season. By boat, you can leave from Tamarindo or Playas del Coco. The area is remote, and there are basic camping facilities near the beach, including picnic tables, grills, restrooms, and showers, but no potable water, so bring your own supplies. The best surf conditions are during the dry season from December to April, when offshore winds are common. During the rainy season, the road can be difficult, and boat access may be more reliable. The spot is recommended for intermediate surfers. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. There are some rocks near the shore, so be careful. Sharks have been reported in the area, so stay alert. Nearby surf spots include Laverinto, Ollie´s Point, Scardog Reef, Flamingo Point, and Brasilito.
