Overview
About this Spot
Scardog Reef is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The spot sits offshore and is only accessible by boat, usually by heading north from Ollie’s Point for about 10 minutes. The break is found at the end of a visible pipeline structure in the water, near a rock formation that stands out in the middle of the ocean. The bottom is made up of coral reef, and the depth around the break is about 20 feet, with sharp coral present along the structure, so caution is needed. The spot works best with a southwest swell and offshore winds from the north, which can be checked on a surf forecast or report before heading out. The waves at Scardog Reef break on both the north and south sides of the pipeline, and the spot provides both left and right waves. The ideal tide for surfing here is low to medium. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The spot is generally empty, offering uncrowded conditions, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if you find other surfers in the water. The water is warm, so a wetsuit is not needed. The area is known for lots of fish, and the clear water can be good for underwater shots. Watch out for rocks and sharp coral, especially if you fall. The spot is recommended for intermediate surfers, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Scardog Reef is near other well-known surf spots like Ollie’s Point, Laverinto, Roca Bruja, Flamingo Point, and Brasilito.
