Niijima Secret

Niijima Secret is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, on the eastern side of Niijima Island. The spot is known for its regional classic quality and is suitable for all levels of surfers, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, and the spot works on all tides. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters, and the frequency of surfable waves is regular. The area is less crowded compared to other beaches on the island, but local surfers value this spot, so always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. The spot can hold bigger swells than other places nearby, and the waves here are longer, though not as hollow as at Habushiura. If other spots are flat, Niijima Secret often has more swell. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The water temperature ranges from about 16.1°C in March to 26.2°C in August, with an average of 21°C, making late summer a good time for surfing. The beach is characterized by white sand, clear blue water, and a 500-foot sandstone cliff. To reach Niijima Secret, you can drive along the coast, but only four-wheel-drive vehicles can handle the sandy path. Alternatively, park at a cliff-top car park about 2 kilometers from Habushiura Beach, descend a 100-step staircase, and walk about 2 kilometers along the shoreline. There is no direct road, and the path down the cliffs can be hard to find, so ask locals for directions. Bring water during the summer.
