Overview
About this Spot
Ohama Beach is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, on the Izu Peninsula. The spot features a sandy bottom and works on all tides. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. There are two main peaks: Ohama Main and Ohama Maizo. Ohama Maizo sits in front of a small river and can offer hollow barrels when the conditions line up. The waves can be fast and powerful, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is suitable for all levels, but the river mouth and rocks on the left can be more challenging. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. Ohama Beach sometimes breaks, and the best surf is usually found during fall and spring, especially when typhoons pass by. In winter, the water gets very cold, so bring the right wetsuit. The beach can get crowded in summer, so it’s better to surf during off-peak seasons or on weekdays. Localism can be an issue, especially when the spot is packed, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. Rips and undertow can be present, so stay aware of the conditions. Facilities at the beach include toilets, showers, shops, and restaurants. Parking is available right in front of the beach, with a large lot and a cement wall for tidal wave protection. The beach has white sand and clear blue water. Other activities in the area include sandboarding, diving, fishing, and biking. Nearby surf spots are Irita Hama, Tadado Beach, Shirahama, Kawazu, and Usami.
