Overview
About this Spot
Niijima Habushiura is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, on the eastern side of Niijima Island in the Izu Islands. The beach stretches for about 6.5 kilometers with a sandy bottom and is known for its regular surf conditions. The spot provides both left and right waves. You can surf here at all tides, and the spot is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions match your level. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The area can be empty, but in summer it gets more crowded, so respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette when the spot is busy. The OIOI World Championship used to be held here, and further up the beach near the missile launch site there are some good banks, but local surfers can be more aggressive in that area. If the surf is flat, you can try the local onsen. There is a temporary campsite next to the beach at the sports ground, which is free, since the main campsite was destroyed in an earthquake. Facilities like restrooms and showers are available, and Habushiura Park nearby offers campgrounds, an outdoor arena, and bike paths. To get to Niijima Habushiura, you can take a ship from Tokyo (Toukai-kisen) which takes about 7 hours, or a plane from Tokyo-Choushi airport, which takes about 45 minutes. The beach is on the opposite side of the island from the town, so follow the road out to the airport and turn left; the road goes past the beach and you can turn off anywhere along the way.
