Overview
About this Spot
Kon Tiki is a surf spot located in Lima, Peru, in the district of Punta Hermosa about 43 kilometers south of Lima city. The spot is found offshore, with access from Punta Hermosa beach and a paddle of over 500 meters to the peak between La Isla and Punta Rocas. You can also paddle out from the north side of Punta Rocas, which is a bit shorter but has more white water. The bottom is a mix of rocks and sand. The spot works on all tides, and the wave length is less than 50 meters. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Kon Tiki is known for its serious waves, with rips and undertow present, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. This spot is sometimes used as a training ground for Pico Alto, and it is less powerful and less hollow than Pico Alto, but still requires experience, especially when the swell is big. Positioning can be difficult, especially with widely spaced sets, and getting caught out of position is not fun. Tides are not a big factor here; if there is swell, the spot works. On intermediate swells, Kon Tiki can be a good option when other breaks are crowded, as fewer people paddle out this far. Crowds are mostly an issue in summer, and the spot is usually empty outside of peak season. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette. The spot is protected under Peruvian law. Nearby surf spots include Punta Rocas, Puntilla, La Isla, El Paso, and Playa Norte.
