Overview
About this Spot
Pico Alto is a surf spot located in Lima, Peru, in the Punta Hermosa district about 43 km south of Lima city. This spot is known for its big waves, often reaching up to 24 feet, and is considered one of the largest surf breaks in South America. The break is found about 1.5 kilometers offshore from Playa Norte, so getting to the lineup requires a long paddle or a boat ride. The bottom is a mix of rocks and sand. Pico Alto works on all tides, but only breaks when the swell is big, usually from April to August. The spot is exposed to big Pacific swells, and the sets can be long, with 15-20 waves per set. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The area is mostly empty, but it can draw crowds when the forecast shows a big swell. The spot is best for experienced surfers who are comfortable with powerful waves and strong rips. Bring a big gun board in the 9-10 feet range for safety and performance. Timing and placement are important because the waves are powerful and the paddle out is challenging. If you get caught inside, watch out for the reform shore-break on Playa Norte, which can get heavy when Pico Alto is working. The spot has seen both paddle-in and tow-in surfing. Tides are not a big factor, but the swell size is. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Nearby surf spots include Playa Norte, Señoritas, Caballeros, El Paso, and Puntilla. Always check the surf report, forecast, map, and webcam before heading out. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
