Umhlanga Rocks

Umhlanga Rocks is a surf spot located in Durban, South Africa, just north of the city along the M4. The spot is known for its consistent beach breaks and warm water temperatures, usually between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, and the spot works on all tides. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Swell from the east and wind from the west are the best conditions for surfing here. Waves start working at less than 1 meter and can hold up to 4 meters, with average ride lengths under 50 meters, though on good days they can reach up to 300 meters. The area is generally less crowded, but when it does get busy, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The local surf community is friendly, and Umhlanga Rocks has a history with the Wave Wizards surf club. The spot is suitable for all levels, but the surf can be powerful and there are rocks in the water, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The area was one of the first in South Africa to have shark nets installed in the 1960s, which reduced serious shark attacks, but the nets also affect other marine life. Recent storms have changed the spot, and while it can still offer fun sessions, conditions are not as reliable as before.
